Bayern Munich shelved €80 million for Lucas Hernandez from Atlético de Madrid in 2019. The German giants likely saw the French defender as the pillar of their backline for the foreseeable future.
However, injuries did play a role in limiting Hernandez’s availability. Fast forward to the summer of 2023, the 27-year-old is now with Paris Saint-Germain. While not all transfers work out, the defender’s time with the Bundesliga side didn’t sit well with some.
Lothar Matthäus, a Bayern Munich legend, noted that Hernandez didn’t work out due to his attitude and behavior.
“Hernández showed no gratitude, no character,” Matthäus told Bild. “If he had wanted to serve Bayern after the troubled four years on and off the pitch, during which Bayern also supported him privately, he should have humbly signed a contract [Bayern wanted to extend him] … The perfect example of lack of character.”
Hernandez will look for a fresh start with PSG after the Ligue 1 champions paid €47 million for the defender. The French giants must do their best to ensure the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner can stay healthy and rediscover his past form.
The PSG defender will also look to prove his healthy after suffering an ACL tear at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the UEFA Euro 2024 on the horizon next summer.
