Inter Miami Owner Reveals Start Date of Talks with Lionel Messi for MLS Move

It’s only a matter when Inter Miami presents former Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi at a press conference. The 35-year-old left Europe after his contract with the French giants expired on June 30.

Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, explained how the South Florida-based club began their talks with Messi in an interview with El Pais. Mas said that the Argentine’s contract would be “between 50 and 60 million a year”, less than what Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal was offering.

“In 2019, we began to think about how we could bring it to Miami, a global city on the rise,” Mas said (h/t Mundo Deportivo). “We want people, when they think of soccer in the United States, to think of Miami. It lives well, and it’s pure business. Everyone wants to move here. We do not pay local or state taxes …”

Messi will also have a stake in the club when he retires and a portion of the profits from the global broadcast, whose rights are from Apple TV, as well as from the sale of the Adidas kit.

The 36-year-old could also have a former PSG teammate join him at Intern Miami. SPORT reported on Sunday that Ramos is in very advanced negotiations with the MLS side. Along with the former PSG defender, Jordi Alba is near agreeing to join the club that David Beckham co-owns.
