When Kylian Mbappe announced at last month’s UNFP Awards ceremony that he would stay put at Paris Saint-Germain for next season, it seemed as if there would be no rumors and speculation this summer regarding his club future. A mere two weeks later, this has all changed.
Mbappe has reportedly sent a letter to PSG informing the club that he does not plan to exercise the one-year option in his contract. The French international signed off on a two-year extension deal with PSG last year that includes an option for a third year.
As noted by L’Equipe’s Loic Tanzi, PSG is reportedly “surprised” by today’s news regarding Mbappe’s future with the club. Tanzi added that Mbappe and PSG had been in talks for weeks about a possible extension deal, and such discussions included the possibility of “co-investments.”
From PSG’s stance, the club reportedly has no plans to allow Mbappe to leave the team as a free agent next year. PSG hopes to come to terms with Mbappe on a new extension deal.
Mbappe is just coming off of a potent sixth season at PSG in which he scored 41 goals in all competitions.
