Inter Miami Shakeup: Phil Neville Fired, Search On for Messi-Connected Coach – Report

Inter Miami announced on Thursday that they have sacked manager, Phil Neville. Well, this managerial change leads back to Lionel Messi, as SPORT reports that the South Florida club could reunite the 35-year-old with an ex-manager.

The Spanish media outlet revealed that the team, co-owned by David Beckham, would have set their sights on Gerardo Martino to take the reins of the squad.

Furthermore, Martino has a history of managing Messi at the club and international level. The Argentine spent time as FC Barcelona’s manager for the 2013-14 season and the with the Argentina national team from 2014 to 2016.

SPORT adds to their reporting that Inter Miami would see Martino as the perfect coach for the Paris Saint-Germain star to better adapt to MLS. The 60-year-old was Atlanta United’s boss from 2016 to 2018, where he won the MLS Cup in the 2018 season.

Martino has experience managing in MLS and coaching Messi to help the veteran adjust to football in the United States.

Finally, the information notes Inter Miami also ensures that the signing of Sergio Busquets remains an option on the table, something that the player himself did not rule out since he intends to continue playing in a country where he cannot face Barcelona.
