The speculation regarding Lionel Messi and a return to FC Barcelona included the possibility of Sergio Busquets extending his contract to play alongside his close friend.

Many assumed that Busquets put his future on hold until Messi decided where he’d play in the 2023-24 season, as returning to Camp Nou is an option. However, SPORT reported on Tuesday that the veteran midfielder will leave the Catalan side.

Furthermore, the Spanish media outlet notes that Saudi Arabia is the No. 1 option for Busquets’ new destination for next season, although the footballer has not yet decided anything.

He only knows that he will not continue to wear Barcelona next season since he will not renew his current contract. SPORT also states that a public announcement should come either Wednesday or Thursday as Barcelona nears winning the La Liga title.

The club could also announce Busquets’ departure once the team wraps up winning La Liga. Nonetheless, the decision will come on the 34-year-old’s terms, as Barcelona respects the player’s will, given that it has earned the right to determine his future and make it official.

It will be interesting to see if the midfielder’s departure affects the decision from Messi as Barcelona does everything to reunite with the Argentine.
