FC Barcelona is doing everything possible to ensure they reunite with Lionel Messi this summer when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in June.
Although Barcelona manager Xavi isn’t keen on giving minute-by-minute updates regarding the Spanish club’s pursuit of Messi, he did confirm some reporting that the football media recently did.
Xavi verified that there was a meeting between the Catalan team and La Liga to discuss the feasibility plan for the return of Messi. However, he avoided referring specifically to the possible arrival of the Argentine footballer.
“Yes [Barcelona met with La Liga], but not only for the possible arrival of Leo,” Xavi told reporters (h/t ESPN Deportes). “We’ll see in order to improve the squad for next year, but it is not the important issue; there is still a league to win.
“Tomorrow we have a key game and this is the important issue. This is a matter of Mateu (Alemany) and he informs us, but, in theory, everything is going well.”
While the Catalan side wants a reunion, their finances remain a significant hurdle, so Xavi tempted any expectations of Messi’s return. Barcelona can come out with a creative way to pay his salary, but it’s in the hands of La Liga.
“In the end, we don’t know if it’s going to happen or not,” Xavi continued. “It’s very soon to talk about it. We are focused on the match against Betis and on winning La Liga, which would give us a lot of stability. We will talk about possible signings.”
It will be interesting to see if Messi returns to Barcelona because contract extension talks with PSG have stalled. As a result, the Argentine might have to consider a move to MLS.
