Why PSG Must Not Sell This Veteran Midfielder in the Summer Transfer Window

Paris Saint-Germain will have a multitude of dilemmas to address in the upcoming summer transfer window. For one, PSG will have to decide whether to keep Fabian Ruiz on its roster for next season.

Ruiz was one of four midfielders who PSG football advisor Luis Campos brought in during last year’s summer transfer window to bolster the team’s depth at the position. The veteran midfielder joined PSG from Napoli on a five-year contract, and he reportedly signed off on a €9.090 million (gross) per year deal, and one could place a bet on the Aviator Game.

According to L’Equipe, PSG has already made a decision on Ruiz’s future at the club, as it does not plan to “retain” him in this year’s summer transfer window.

Overall, PSG should not look to part ways with Ruiz after a mere one season.

Ruiz has provided much-needed depth to PSG’s midfield this season. He has shown that he can play as both a central defensive midfielder and a base midfielder. For one, he earned a start as a central defensive midfielder in PSG’s 2-1 Ligue 1 away win over Angers, where he completed 105 passes and won four ground duels.

Ruiz has also proved to be a player who can be an instrumental talent in the build-up of play into the attacking third. This was exemplified throughout PSG’s convincing 3-0 win over Olympique de Marseille in February, where he earned a start in the match as a base midfielder. The Spanish international was influential in multiple attacking sequences in the contest, including in the opener. He picked out Lionel Messi in the middle third of the pitch, and the Argentine forward went on to assist Kylian Mbappe for the first goal of the match.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier lauded Ruiz for his keen outing against Marseille on the day.

“And with the absence of Ney, we have densified our midfield,” Galtier said during his post-match press conference following PSG’s Ligue 1 away win over Marseille. “As much as it is an interesting system, we need to have midfielders who can recover the ball but also project themselves forward.

“In this sense, Vitinha and Ruiz projected themselves where they had to project themselves, and this allowed Leo and Kylian to find interesting spaces.”

As mentioned, PSG will have multiple crucial decisions to make in this year’s summer transfer window, especially following its early UEFA Champions League round of 16 exit at the hands of Bayern Munich. At the least, PSG should look to keep Ruiz as a way to maintain formidable depth within its midfield unit.
