What Barcelona’s Jordi Alba Said About Potential Messi Return This Summer

FC Barcelona isn’t operating in the shadows regarding their interest in Lionel Messi. The Argentine will become a free agent when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in June.

As the summer months approach, there’s much speculation as to where Messi will play the 2023-24 season; nonetheless, Barcelona defender Jordi Alba hopes for the “perfect” ending that sees the Argentine back at Camp Nou.

“It is Leo’s decision,” Alba told GOAL. “Honestly, we haven’t talked about this topic, but it’s clear that in the end, seeing Messi with another shirt other than Barca’s is always weird.

“In the end, if he wants to and the club wants to, it’s perfect for me. He has been the player with whom I have understood the best on the pitch.”

It seems the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner’s time with PSG is ending after two seasons and back-to-back UEFA Champions League disappointments. Nonetheless, a move back to Barcelona isn’t as black and white as some might view the situation.

The Spanish club continues to have financial hurdles, so their reported offer will see Messi take a pay cut should he accept. Furthermore, La Liga president Javier Tebas offered a gloomy prognostication over a Messi return.

Messi could also look to MLS if European options begin to dwindle as Inter Miami remains in the race to lure the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to the United States.
