Former World Cup Winner Drops a Strong Take on Neymar’s PSG Future

Former FIFA World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit believes that Paris Saint-Germain should look to part ways with Neymar in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Neymar endured yet another injured-plagued season this year. The Brazilian forward’s 2022-2023 season was cut short during PSG’s Ligue 1 home fixture against Lille OSC in February, as he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the second half of the contest. He underwent surgery on his right ankle last month, and he will not feature for PSG again this season.

Speaking on RMC Sport’s “Rothen s’enflamme” program, Petit laid out a case for why PSG should look to offload Neymar after this season.

“I feel that this season is the season of too much for Neymar,” Petit said. “I think the story must end now. This season, again, has been mixed. I think the connection he has with Messi is important, and I don’t think Messi will stay.

“I feel like Neymar doesn’t have the head to be a very high-level football player anymore.”

Neymar finished the ongoing Ligue 1 campaign with 24 goal contributions over 20 matches played. He has played in under 30 contests in all competitions in four out of his six seasons at PSG.
