Lionel Messi received a multitude of boos and whistles from many Paris Saint-Germain supporters for the second straight year. The Argentine forward was booed when his name was announced ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 home fixture against Olympique Lyonnais.
Multiple former PSG players have since chimed in with their take on whether it was right for those club supporters to rain down boos and whistles toward Messi. Former PSG forward Omar da Fonseca is among those such players who believe that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner did not deserve to hear such a reception before the Ligue 1 powerhouse’s home match on Sunday.
“Obviously, there is the nostalgia of finding the great Messi for everyone, and me first,” da Fonseca told Bein Sports France. “By saying that the framework is not ideal for him, I am not inventing anything. It is not the same Messi, time has passed.
“But the whistles are exaggerated.”
Messi did create five goal-scoring chances against Lyon, but the veteran forward failed to record a single goal contribution for the third time in PSG’s last four matches in all competitions.
Messi is slated to next feature for PSG in its upcoming Ligue 1 away matchup against OGC Nice coming up on matchday 30.
