Fabrizio Romano Spotlights Two Factors in Barcelona’s Pursuit of Messi

The future of Lionel Messi is filled with reports that are taking football fans on a rollercoaster ride. Messi will become a free agent in June when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires and he can sign anywhere.

In his latest column for CaughtOffside, transfer window specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed the latest regarding FC Barcelona’s pursuit to reunite with their former player, who left in 2021.

“Barcelona feel they are in the race to sign Messi,” Romano said. “There is still no official proposal from the club – a lot will depend on Messi’s relationship with [club president Joan Laporta], as well as how Barcelona can comply with Financial Fair Play rules.

“But for sure, Barcelona are there, while PSG’s proposal remains valid and they are still insisting to extend Messi’s contract. The situation is now open, way more than it was in December when Messi was close to extending his contract with PSG.”

Barcelona also reportedly has figured out how they intend to pay Messi should they proceed to make an official offer to the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner this summer, should their financial situation allow them.

Additionally, the Spanish club isn’t alone in its pursuit. Messi’s boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys, also attempts to convince the veteran goal scorer to leave Europe and head to South America. However, it’s a long shot as the PSG star appears keen on playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Nonetheless, expect the Messi comments and rumors to continue until he decides where his career will continue.

  1. What a load of garbage. As far as I can see, he will not be playing in Europe after the summer. There is no way he is worth it for PSG, with the kind of money he wants. Barca fans might want him, but I SERIOUSLY doubt that management would want him. If there is someone in management that wants him. they probably shouldn’t be in management. I really think he is going to go to Miami.
