FC Barcelona hopes to reunite with Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi when his contract expires in June and he becomes a free agent.
However, the Spanish club isn’t the only one that eyes a reunion with Messi as Sergio Busquets wants to play again with his former teammate. The midfielder could play at Barcelona or Inter Miami with Messi for the 2023-24 season.
Even with this, Barcelona manager Xavi stated that Busquets’ future isn’t necessarily tied to the Argentine.
“The most important thing is that Busquets is calm and helps us until the end of the season,” Xavi told reporters (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
“I don’t think his decision will depend on whether Messi comes or not. It’s difficult to choose the path, it happened to me. He knows it’s important for him team and, if it continues, it will continue to be important for Barça.”
Despite Xavi’s words, Mundo Deportivo reported that Busquets is planning his future linked to Messi and seems willing to continue at the Barça club because he is convinced that the Argentine will return this summer.
Suppose Busquets finally decides to continue at Barcelona. In that case, it will not be for money because the renewal proposal he has received has been deficient compared to the token currently charged by the captain.
Inter Miami is waiting in the wings after making a trade that could help their chances of landing Busquets and Messi this summer, so it will be interesting to see how this transpires.
