Paris Saint-Germain is still in a contract extension dilemma with Lionel Messi. PSG aspires to reach an agreement on a new contract deal with Messi, who is slated to become a free agent in the upcoming summer transfer window.
On Friday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared a few updates regarding Messi’s future at PSG. Romano noted that the current standstill between Messi and PSG club officials on this matter is not due to “money.”
Messi, who has already received a contract proposal from PSG, “wants to understand” what will be the club’s project for next season.
In the big picture, Messi wants to continue playing club football in Europe. He has received interest from teams such as MLS side Inter Miami for a possible free transfer agreement, but the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner prefers to at the least play another season in the continent.
Messi is still performing at a world-class level. He currently leads Ligue 1 in multiple stats, including goal contributions (26) and big chances created (22).
For now, Messi is slated to feature in PSG’s upcoming Ligue 1 home fixture against Rennes, which will be the club’s first match at the Parc des Princes since its UEFA Champions League elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich.
