Paris Saint-Germain and Lionel Messi continue to have reported contract extension discussions. However, both parties have yet to reach an agreement with the 35-year-old as his current deal expires in June.
While on the set of L’Équipe du Soir, Le Parisien journalist Dominique Sévérac gave the latest (h/t Canal Supporters) on the contract extension talks between PSG and Messi, as there are two significant hurdles.
Sévérac gave the first, which is the contract length that the Argentine wants to remain in the French capital. Messi would like a two-year contract; meanwhile, PSG is keen on only offering one more season.
The second hurdle is the wages; nonetheless, Sévérac doesn’t give the details regarding what the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is demanding and what the Ligue 1 side is willing to offer.
PSG should likely move on from Messi and free up his wages to use this summer transfer window to add more depth to the squad rather than extending his contract.
Furthermore, there’s also the reported interest that FC Barcelona has in reuniting with Messi. However, their financial issues remain a hindrance, so the Spanish club will look at other ways to satisfy the Argentine’s economic demands.
Messi must decide where he wants to play next season, as PSG needs to factor in whether they’ll need to replace his production.
