Lionel Messi has been at the center of criticism after Paris Saint-Germain crashed out in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 to Bayern Munich, 3-0 on aggregate.
With the 35-year-old’s contract expiring, many also call for the French giants not to extend Messi’s contract. Ex-PSG and France player Jerome Rothen believes that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner isn’t committed to the capital club. However, one former player is coming to the Argentine’s defense.
Ex-France international Johan Micoud stated it is unfair to say that Messi doesn’t care about PSG during his two seasons with the French giants.
“You can’t speak in the player’s place,” Micoud told L’Equipe (h/t GOAL). “What allows you to say that he doesn’t care about PSG? He told you that, right? No, but you’re already talking like that.
“You can say he’s not happy here, but he doesn’t care about PSG… I don’t see that on the pitch. I don’t see anyone who doesn’t give a damn. I can’t let you say that. It’s not true.”
Messi’s future is uncertain and while there are rumors of PSG and the Argentine’s camp engaging in contract extension talks, nothing has been signed.
Additionally, there’s reporting of a possible return to FC Barcelona, despite their financial situation. There’s also the possibility of Messi signing with MLS side Inter Miami keen on bringing him to South Florida.
