Maxwell Gives Honest Take on Lionel Messi Signing Extension at PSG

Lionel Messi will be out of a contract as of June when his deal with Paris Saint-Germain expires. The capital club is in discussions with Messi’s camp, but no extension has yet been reached.

Former PSG defender Maxwell spoke with Canal Plus (h/t Paris Fans) on various topics, including the possible Messi contract extension, as many people are calling for the Ligue 1 side to move on.

“We may have the best player in history in the squad,” Maxwell told the French media outlet. “I don’t know why there is a debate. I would always like to have him on my team.

“This is an example of a person who always wants to win. He is a great example for young people. When I played with him, it was exceptional to be with him on the pitch.”

RMC Sport recently reported the latest regarding Messi remaining in Paris. While the two sides are discussing an extension, the French media outlet notes that the wages the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner demands is a significant hurdle.

Messi wants a salary that’s near what Kylian Mbappé earns, which is a problem since the 35-year-old is showing a decline and hasn’t been able to perform in the Champions League knockout stages for two straight years.

Unless the Argentine takes a salary cut, it’s hard to envision the former FC Barcelona star remaining in the French capital past this 2022-23 season.
