Days removed from its UEFA Champions League round of 16 elimination against Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain returned to Ligue 1 play on matchday 27 with an away fixture against Brest.
It was far from an effortless performance from PSG, but a late goal from Kylian Mbappe ended up clinching a 2-1 away win for the reigning Ligue 1 champions. Lionel Messi assisted Mbappe on the goal, as the Argentine forward finished with six goal-scoring chances created for teammates in the match.
Mbappe and Messi could have simply thrown in the towel on the season following PSG’s early Champions League exit, but as manager Christophe Galtier touched on following his team’s victory over Brest, this was not the case at all.
“Kylian, Leo (Messi), the team wanted to win,” Galtier said. “I don’t think it had anything to do with Wednesday’s loss, but with a big desire to win tonight. That’s it.”
PSG is currently on a four-match winning streak in Ligue 1 play.
PSG now holds an 11-point lead over second-place Olympique de Marseille in the Ligue 1 standings. Marseille will be in action on Sunday with a Ligue 1 home contest against Strasbourg.
