There were grand expectations placed on Paris Saint-Germain when it signed Lionel Messi on a free transfer deal in 2021. PSG has since enjoyed much domestic success, but it has failed to win the UEFA Champions League competition with its Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe attacking trio.
Some have called for PSG to at least part ways with one of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe. However, former Ballon d’Or winner Michel Platini believes that the Ligue 1 powerhouse can still succeed with these three forwards leading the way.
“But of course Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe can play together,” Platini said during a recent appearance on RMC Sport’s “Rothen s’enflamme” program. “They are exceptional, they play well. It’s wonderful to see Paris Saint-Germain play. Then you play a European Cup match, you play against Real, which is a very, very big European team, and it goes badly, you play Bayern, which is a very, very big European team, and it goes badly. That’s how it is, that’s football.
“Even in Barcelona, Neymar and Messi did not win the European Cup every year.”
As Platini touched on, Barcelona won just one Champions League title in the four seasons where Messi and Neymar led its attack. Barca did not pull off a run to the Champions League semifinal round in any of the other three such seasons.
Mbappe and Neymar are both under contract at PSG for next season, but Messi is slated to become a free agent in the upcoming summer transfer window. From PSG to a possible return to Barca, the Argentine forward sure will have multiple options for just where he will play club football next season.
#MNM are not the problem at PSG , the egos and individually plays are the problem……every player in the starting line up must play 15 out of 10 ( that’s adding or playing more than his role)
