Cesc Fàbregas Explains Why Lionel Messi Viewed as Barcelona Player Despite Exit

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has his future up in the air. The 35-year-old’s contract with the capital club expires in June, and he has yet to decide where to play the 2023-24 season.

Various rumors suggest Messi could stay with PSG or head elsewhere, likely Inter Miami. Nonetheless, wherever La Pulga goes, Cesc Fàbregas believes the Argentine will always be an FC Barcelona player.

“[Messi appears] sentimentally; I think it will always be like that,” Cesc Fàbregas told El Larguero on Tuesday. “A person who has spent 25 years at [Barcelona], who has been the most important legend in the club’s history as a player and this does not change from one day to the next.

“Of course, he is at Paris Saint Germain and will win this The Best and this World Cup as a Paris Saint-Germain player … But it is true that in the eyes of all Barcelona fans, Leo will always be Leo for us and we will see him as ours.”

There are rumors that the Spanish club is in the mix for Messi to return to Camp Nou should he want to remain in Europe, but that could likely be all smoke and mirrors. It might only be down to PSG and Inter Miami, who win the Messi sweepstakes.

As for PSG, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner’s tenure in the French capital might come down to how he performs in the second-leg contest against Bayern Munich on March 8 at Allianz Arena.

Messi’s chances of staying could increase if the French giants overcome their 1-0 hole and advance to the quarterfinals.
