Warren Zaire-Emery Explains Looking Off Lione Messi to Score Historic PSG Goal

Warren Zaire-Emery made club history on Wednesday night when the midfielder became the youngest player to ever score a Ligue 1 goal for Paris Saint-Germain at 16 years and 10 months.

The PSG youngster flashed his confidence on the goal as the teenager didn’t look toward an open Lionel Messi late in the second half. Zaire-Emery scored to ice the 3-1 win over Montpellier Hérault SC at the Stade de la Mosson.

Zaire-Emery spoke with Canal Plus (h/t Culture PSG) postgame, where he was asked about the goal and looking off, arguably the GOAT.

“I saw [Messi], but I knew shooting [the ball] was the best option,” Zaire-Emery said laughingly. “I took my chance and it paid off.”

Furthermore, the PSG youth product didn’t know that he had made club history when he scored the third goal for the capital club. So it surprised him when the French broadcast informed him of the accomplishment.

“I did not know,” Zaire-Emery said. “It’s awesome ! It’s my first goal in Ligue 1, so I’m very happy. I project myself often, well, I try to do it as much as possible. Today it paid off by leading to that first goal, so I’m taking it. I hope there will be others.”

Zaire-Emery will turn 17 in March, but the midfielder is already turning himself into a mainstay on the PSG squad. As a result, the sky is the limit for the youngster.
