Messi scored the 697th goal of his club career during the second half of Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 away fixture against Montpellier. Messi was on the end of a keen pass from midfielder Fabian Ruiz, who recorded the first assist of his Ligue 1 career.

Overall, Messi now holds the record for the most goals scored in all competitions in Europe’s top five leagues, breaking a tie with Cristiano Ronaldo (696).
