One could debate for hours on just who the greatest player of all-time is. For Juventus playmaker Angel Di Maria, he has much respect for what Diego Maradona accomplished during his playing days, but he believes that Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi is the best player in the sport’s history.
During a recent appearance on ESPN Argentina’s “ESPN F90” program, the former PSG star shared just why he is siding with Messi over Maradona in the greatest player of all-time debate.
“For me, yes,” Di Maria said when asked if Messi is the greatest in football history. “Diego is Diego. … Sincerely I have to take my hat off to him because he has helped me in the most difficult moments when everyone criticized me and until the day I die I will say that Diego is everything but my generation, what I saw, what I have in my head, the best in history is Leo without a doubt.”
To many, Messi’s strong run of performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup put an end to this debate. From the 10 total goal contributions to the two goals scored in the final against France, the PSG star delivered when it mattered the most for the Argentina national team.
Messi could soon add to his already stacked trophy cabinet, especially as PSG currently holds the top spot in the Ligue 1 standings and is still in the running to win this season’s UEFA Champions League competition.
