Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi is on the doorstep of once again making history in his storied career.
Messi has so far scored 696 goals in his club career in Europe’s top five leagues, with 13 goals coming this season with the reigning Ligue 1 champions. Overall, the Argentine forward has tallied nine goals in domestic competitions and four goals in UEFA Champions League play in the ongoing campaign.
As it stands, Messi needs a mere one more goal to break a tie with Cristiano Ronaldo for the most goals scored in all competitions in Europe’s top five leagues.
Unless Ronaldo decides to return to a club in Europe’s top five leagues, the Portuguese international will finish his career with 696 goals logged for such teams, spanning his runs with Real Madrid (450), Manchester United (145), and Juventus (101).
The PSG star will have a chance to score the 697th goal of his club career in the Ligue 1 side’s upcoming league matchup against Montpellier.
