The 2023 Major League Soccer season is on the horizon, but the storyline that will dominate off the pitch will be if Inter Miami can land 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Lionel Messi this summer.
Messi’s contract will expire in June and while reports suggest that the 35-year-old wants to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, nothing has been signed yet. Inter Miami boss Gary Neville spoke about the Messi rumors surrounding the club.
“For us, the landscape’s not changed at all,” Neville said (h/t MLS Soccer). “With any deal for any DP of the level you’re talking about is complicated, it takes time … Rest assured we’re working every second of every day to bring in the best players, and I think he’s one of the best. “
Inter Miami captain Gregore echoed Neville’s sentiments, stating he’d enjoy playing alongside one of the world’s most famous athletes.
“It can happen,” the Brazilian midfielder stated. “… If Messi comes, I’ll be really happy. Imagine working with Messi. Why not?”
Signing Messi would make the South Florida club must-watch, considering the Argentine showed he can still play at a high level after his performance at the World Cup in Qatar.
Messi’s ability to play at a high level might be why he stays another season in the capital club, but until he puts pen to paper, Inter Miami will hold out hope they can sign him.
