Ligue 1: Why Lionel Scaloni Picks Messi Over Maradona In GOAT Debate

Now that Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has a FIFA World Cup under his belt, the speculatory debate with Diego Maradona appears to be on an even playing field.

During coach Lionel Scaloni’s appearance on Cadena COPE (h/t Telemundo Deportes), the Argentine manager was asked who he would pick between Maradona and Messi.

Maradona won the 1986 World Cup, but Scaloni prefers to go with Messi because of the relationship he has helped establish. However, the Argentine boss also stated that Maradona is a legend in his own right.

“If I have to stay with one, I’ll stay with Leo, with whom I have something special. He’s the best in history, although Maradona was also great,” Scaloni said.

There’s no doubt many will be picking Messi over Maradona now that the 35-year-old has a World Cup on his resume. Furthermore, despite his age, the Paris Saint-Germain star was the engine of the Argentina attack this past tournament in Qatar.

Nonetheless, it will be an interesting debate from now on between generations as to which player was the GOAT of Argentina football.
