La Liga: Why Real Madrid Chose Not to Sell Marco Asensio to PSG, per AS Journalist

In the final hours of the January transfer window, a weird rumor surfaced linking Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio. However, that gossip quickly went away.

AS confirmed on Tuesday, citing sources, that the French club contacted Madrid to express their interest in the Spanish winger on Saturday.

The 27-year-old’s contract expires in June, which is why the capital club targeted him. Furthermore, Asensio welcomed the interest from PSG, but as of now, his priority is to remain with Real Madrid.

“Well, nothing, on Saturday PSG, through [Asensio’s agent] Jorge Mendes, who transmitted an offer to Madrid for Asensio and Madrid’s response was immediately negative,” Manu Sainz told AS TV.

“They informed him that Asensio is not for sale, and they added that, in fact, he is a player they are going to want to renew, that they are going to present him with a renewal offer shortly. So there the story ends. Asensio didn’t see a bad move in going to PSG, but of course, his priority is to play for Madrid.”

However, if talks don’t between Asensio and Real Madrid don’t go as planned, the forward has the interest from PSG to lean on to get the contract he wants.

Over the last three seasons, the capital club has explored the free agent market and this year, they’ve already got a head start as Milan Škriniar will join the Ligue 1 side in July. Perhaps down the road, PSG could look to add Asensio as free agent No. 2.
