Arda Turan Explains Why He Rooted for Lionel Messi Over Cristiano Ronaldo to Win 2022 World Cup

Many current and former players pulled for Lionel Messi to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The 35-year-old would go on to lift the trophy that has long eluded him after Argentina defeated France in penalty kicks (4-2).

In an interview on Mehmet Demirkol’s Galaxy Guide program on Socrates Youtube channel, former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona player Arda Turan explained why he wanted to see Messi lift the trophy over Cristiano Ronaldo.

The tournament in Qatar was the last for Messi and Ronaldo, so there was an obvious debate as to which of the two would win the competition in their final crack at winning a World Cup.

“I really wanted Leo to win,” Turan said (h/t GOAL Turkey). “Because he is the best in history. Ronaldo is also a great scorer, but in the team Ronaldo plays, you may not always dominate the game.

“But if Messi is in hand, you can always dominate the games. That’s why I used to say ‘Messi is the best,’ and the team I was convinced of this after he became his friend. Messi is very friendly. He always helps when you have a request. Messi cannot be explained. It’s something else.”

The careers of Messi and Ronaldo appear to head toward different endings as the former Real Madrid star recently signed with Al-Nassr; meanwhile, the Argentine has to decide on his future.

Messi’s contract expires in June, and all signs point to an extension at PSG, but the possibility of heading to MLS’ Inter Miami is still on the table. Nonetheless, a decision should be coming soon.
