Should PSG Move for Jonathan David Before It’s Too Late?

Jonathan David is one of the hottest footballing talents ever to have emerged from Canada, and he has been tearing up Ligue 1 since moving to Lille in 2020. In 90 league games, he’s bagged 37 goals for the club and has shown his versatility in attack.

It has been reported that various Premier League clubs are circling and hoping to swoop for David’s signature. Paris Saint-Germain should get in there first as he could help their attack evolve in the seasons ahead.

David Has the Potential to be Huge

David has the potential to be one of the biggest stars to come out of North America in the history of the sport. He appeared at his first World Cup this year in Qatar and will be in the next iteration of the competition in 2026 when it comes to his home soil.

Canada was dumped out of the World Cup in the group stage this time, but this didn’t come as a great surprise as they’d been placed in a difficult group alongside the likes of Belgium and Croatia. The Canada World Cup odds had been long going into the tournament, with bookies rating their chances of winning at around 1000/1 before a ball was kicked. The good news for David was that he got some much-needed experience on the biggest stage, and this will help him push on over the next few years.

Premier League Clubs Circling David

According to reports, David’s exploits at Lille have not been going unnoticed across Europe. He helped the French club towards an unprecedented league title in his first season at Stade Pierre-Mauroy and carried on his red-hot form in his second campaign.

Now, Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in securing the Canadian’s signature. Both sides are short on talent at the spearhead of their attacks and would benefit from a player like David who can play as an out-and-out forward or a support striker. Scouts from the top clubs in the world will have analyzed David’s performances for club and country, along with his potential for growth over the next decade. They will have realized that signing a player like the Canadian could make a lot of sense.

David is contracted to Lille until 2025, and the 2020-21 champions paid €30 million for him. That means that they will want a considerable markup on that fee if they are to let him go. This could price out many of the clubs that are interested.

Could be a Great Addition to PSG

PSG is one club that undoubtedly has the cash to splash on David, and his signature could be huge for Christophe Galtier. PSG may have the hottest attack in the world right now with Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe, but it does need to evolve. Messi and Neymar are in the later stages of their careers, and Mbappe continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Therefore, getting David in now so he can learn alongside these legends of the game could be a masterstroke. Galtier could develop his skills so he’s ready to fill these massive shoes when the current attackers eventually depart. It’s highly beneficial that David is already accustomed to the league, meaning that it wouldn’t take long for him to make the transition to PSG’s attack.

David could be destined for great things, and snaffling him up now before he enters his prime seems like a wise move. PSG may have to move quickly before David’s tempted by big names in the Premier League.
