2022 World Cup: Netherlands Striker Admits ‘Dissapointed’ in Messi’s Behavior During Quarterfinals Match

The 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal matchup between Argentina and Netherlands was tense, to say the least. Both sides were barking and confronting each other, even Lionel Messi was involved in having tense exchanges.

After Argentina won on penalty kicks, one of the heated confrontations the Paris Saint-Germain star had occurred postgame when he got into a heated dialogue with Dutch striker Wout Weghorst.

Messi was in the middle of a postgame interview, leading the veteran forward to call Weghorst a “bobo,” which translates to fool or an idiot. The 30-year-old did respond to the confrontation, saying the Argentine’s behavior “disappointed him.”

“I wanted to shake his hand after the game, I have a lot of respect for him as a soccer player, but he threw my hand to his side and didn’t want to talk to me,” Weghorst said on Friday after the loss (h/t Marca). “My Spanish isn’t very good, but he said disrespectful words to me and that disappoints me, really disappointed.”

Argentina moved on and will now focus on Croatia, who eliminated Brazil in their quarterfinal matchup, so they will not come in intimidated by the South American nation.

The CONMEBOL side will have plenty of motivation on Tuesday as a win puts them closer to giving Messi the storybook ending of winning the World Cup.
