Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi will be playing in his final FIFA World Cup when the ball gets rolling in Qatar. The 2022 edition of the competition will see if the 35-year-old can win the trophy that has long eluded him.
In an interview with Spanish media outlet Relevo, former Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke about how the Argentina national team will fare in the competition and whether the team should play through Messi.
Pochettino believes that there’s no question that current Argentine boss Lionel Scaloni should have his tactical game plan go through Messi, considering the veteran forward is having a bounce back season at PSG.
“Obviously, he is the best in the world,” Pochettino said. “Now there is good chemistry between all the members, both in the coaching staff and in the players. And in the country there is a very positive current that was not seen before. A very good energy has been generated around the Argentine team.”
Messi’s 2022-23 football season has recorded 12 goals and 14 assists in 18 appearances for the French giants this campaign. As a result, he’s in good form, with the World Cup set to get going in a few days.
Had the tournament occurred in the summer, there might have been a change in the game plan, but Messi is back to his FC Barcelona form and can the motor in the Argentina attack.
