Former England international Wayne Rooney played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo for multiple seasons at Manchester United, and he also faced off against Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi in two UEFA Champions League finals. In the end, he has opted to side with Messi in the greatest football player of all-time debate.
In an interview with The Times, Rooney brought up Ronaldo and Diego Maradona when discussing just who is the greatest football player of all-time. However, there are several reasons why Messi gets his vote in the best football player ever discussion.
“Everyone has different views on Messi and Ronaldo but I have said many times that I think Messi is the best,” Rooney said. “I have watched lots of videos of Diego Maradona, who was a similar player, but Messi is better.
“He has everything – the way he controls games, his dribbling, his assists – whereas Ronaldo is more of a goalscorer.”
Rooney had a front-row seat to watch Messi shine in two Champions League finals. Overall, the Argentine forward has a career resume stacked with a multitude of impressive team and individual honors, including seven Ballon d’Or wins.
For now, Messi has his sights set on leading the Argentina national team to triumph in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
