The honeymoon period is over for Paris Saint-Germain supporters. According to reports, Kylian Mbappé wants out of the club just a few months after signing a new contract.
The 2022-23 season for PSG started out great for those who took advantage of the skybet sign up offer. The French giants rattled off several lopsided victories over Ligue 1 opponents and kicked off the UEFA Champions League campaign with a win over Juventus FC at the Parc des Princes.
Now, with the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, the wheels have fallen off the cart. Mbappé is reportedly unhappy with PSG executives and claims that promises made to him weren’t kept. The result is the Frenchman allegedly demanding to be sold in the upcoming January transfer window or next summer at the latest.
This is a real blow for PSG. Mbappé is easily one of the top young footballers on the planet and the fact that he’s having second thoughts and accusing the club of breaking a promise doesn’t bode well for the future.
Of course, all of this could be media speculation. It wouldn’t be the first time and it is curious that the news broke right before PSG faced SL Benfica in a pivotal Champions League match. Oh, and the report stemmed from a publication based in Madrid, which just happens to be the home of the club that was linked with Mbappé prior to him signing the new contract last summer.
Assuming the reports are true, Paris Saint-Germain must make a decision that could have a profound impact. Should they sell Mbappé to the highest bidder over the next two transfer windows, or, do what they did when his last contract was winding down and refuse all offers and make him see out the remained of his new deal, which would keep him at the club through the 2023-24 season.
For the benefit of the club, it might be time to part ways with the hometown hero. As talented as Mbappé is, the best PSG has ever done with him is reach the Champions League final. If PSG can sell Mbappé for €200M or more, that money could be reinvested to rebuild the squad.
Over the next few years, PSG will need to rebuild its attack with Messi likely moving on. Neymar Jr. will remain at the club and is a solid piece to build around, but a world-class striker and another winger will be desperately needed. PSG’s defense, led by the aging Sergio Ramos will also need a complete overhaul.
As much as it will hurt to see Mbappé leave PSG, it just might be better for the overall health of the club.
