The rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo between Lionel Messi goes beyond the pitch. Even various lists can bring out those who support either player and create debate as to why a particular player is ranked higher.
SportsPro released their list of the 50 most marketable athletes on Monday, and the Manchester United star is topping the charts. The list is created to help companies determine which athlete to employ as the face of their brand.
When determining the list, SportsPro ranked the athletes on their ‘Marketability Score,’ which consisted of three distinct scoring components: brand strength, economics and audience.
‘Who is the most marketable athlete on the planet today?’ asked Michael Long, SportsPro’s editorial director. ‘We at SportsPro have asked ourselves that very question every year since 2010, and each year the process of answering it provides a fascinating snapshot of the business of athlete marketing.
“Marketability can be defined in many ways, but what’s clear from our in-depth assessment is that each of the athletes in this year’s diverse list delivers considerable value to their brand partners.”
Manchester United’s Ronaldo was named the most marketable athlete after having a ‘marketability score’ of 91.21 out of a possible 100. As for Messi, the 35-year-old was ranked fifth on the list with a score of 53.27, a 34.12 audience reach, and an economic rating of 11.59.
Ronaldo wasn’t the only athlete ahead of the PSG star, as Serena Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and LeBron James finished in front of Messi in the ranking.
