PSG Faces Tough Test in Champions League Knockout Stage

By the time the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 kicks off in just a few months, we would have witnessed an entire FIFA World Cup. For Paris Saint-Germain players returning to the French capital after participating in the global tournament, a tough test will await.

Following the group stage of the Champions League, PSG learned their fate for the knockout stage—a tie against German giants FC Bayern Munich. It was a tough pill to swallow for Les Parisiens as away-goals-scored was the only metric that kept that from topping the group over SL Benfica. So, instead of playing a perceived easier squad, Christophe Galtier’s squad will take on one of the best teams in Europe and they’ll try avoid crashing out at this stage for the second consecutive season and avoid playing a variety of Konami free slots games no download or registration.

While it’s a tough matchup, Bayern isn’t unfamiliar to PSG. The two faced off in the 2020 Champions League final with former PSG youngster, Kingsley Coman, scoring the game-winning goal for the Germans. PSG was able to avenge that defeat the following year in the quarter-finals where they narrowly advanced past Bayern on away goals.

So, how will things turn out this season? The mid-season World Cup will certainly play a role. Players on both sides will certainly return to their clubs fatigued and injury is always a concern. The season resumes for PSG on December 28, and the first match against Bayern is on February 14. Unfortunately, there’s just not enough time for the players to rest after such a taxing tournament.

The outcome will also rely on the January transfer window. Despite a star-studded squad, PSG desperately needs to upgrade its defense. Marquinhos may be the captain of PSG, but ever since the tie against Real Madrid last season in the Champions League, he’s been far from his best. Thirty-six-year-old Sergio Ramos is solid at times, but can he make it an entire season without injury? Presnel Kimpembe came up through PSG’s academy, but he’s far too consistent. All of these issues will force PSG to look for a center-back in the transfer market with Milan Škriniar at the top of the shopping list.

Player Bayern Munich is a great challenge and one that Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr. will be looking forward to. With so much drama surrounding the future of all three players, this could be the last chance for fans to see whether these superstars can lead the club to greatness.
