Journalist Recounts Messi’s Role at Barcelona Under Quique Setién

In Lionel Messi’s final years at FC Barcelona, the 35-year-old had several managers, including Quique Setién, who was at the helm of the squad when they lost 8-2 to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League in 2020.

With Bayern Munich facing off against FC Barcelona on Wednesday for Matchday 5 and the German giants having the opportunity to knock out the Catalan side from the Champions League, pundits are rehashing old wounds.

On Monday’s edition of El Chiringuito, Spanish journalist Cristina Cubero revealed that the Barcelona dressing room didn’t respect Setién and that Messi was leading the group more than the manager.

Setién didn’t last long at his position with Barcelona, only being on the job for a few months. Since his sacking, the 64-year-old has yet to land another job, perhaps waiting for time to forget what had occurred against Bayern Munich.

As Cubero stated, it’s a chapter that the club and their supporters would instead not remember considering Barcelona would waste another year of Messi’s career and would later see him leave.
