Former French Forward Details the One Tactical Change Galtier Must Make for PSG to Win the Champions League This Season

For Paris Saint-Germain to win the UEFA Champions League competition this season, former French forward Jerome Rothen believes that manager Christophe Galtier should once again switch up his formation for the squad.

Galtier has rolled with a three-at-the-back formation this season, but Rothen sees that it is time for PSG to once again operate with four defenders on the pitch, which the former Ligue 1 attacker explained on RMC Sport‘s “After Foot” program.

“If you want to win the Champions League with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe on the field, you absolutely have to go back to three in midfield and transfer a defender to go to four at the back,” Rothen said

Last season, now-former PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino regularly rolled with a 4-3-3 formation for his side, as he often rotated among Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar for the lone center forward spot. This formation churned out mixed results for PSG, although there were other notable factors behind the team’s sluggish attacking production last season.

PSG is just coming off of the 1-1 draw result against Benfica in Champions League group stage play. Next up for PSG will be an away fixture against Stade de Reims on Ligue 1 matchday 10.
