Aston Villa Must Convince Ex-PSG Boss to Ditch One Coaching Rquirement, Pundit Says

Aston Villa fell 3-0 to Fulham on Thursday at Craven Cottage. As a result, the Mauricio Pochettino rumors continue to get louder, with Steven Gerrard on the verge of being sacked.

Pochettino opted to play the waiting game after being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in July. The Argentine didn’t jump into a coaching job right away and has since seen his name in various rumors.

Nonetheless, returning to the Premier League could entice Pochettino. Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher explained that Aston Villa must convince the 50-year-old to forgo waiting for a club in the mix for the UEFA Champions League.

“For the last few weeks, I keep hearing how ambitious, you know, the football club are, and that was why there was more pressure coming on Stevie in the role that he was in,” Carragher said. “But the names that you’ve mentioned and Pochettino, I think will be a great manager. He is a top manager.

“I think he’d be a great appointment for Aston Villa. You look where they are on the table now. Pochettino just come out of PSG coaching and Mbappe, Messi. I’m sure he’ll want to be back at that level in terms of the Champions League, but if Villa could get that over the line, I think that would be a fantastic appointment for them.”

Pochettino’s last two coaching stints were with Tottenham Hotspur and PSG, who both challenge to compete in the Champions League, so for the Argentine tactician, taking over Aston Villa will be a step back.

Furthermore, Pochettino will be put in the middle of a relegation battle should he take over, as he will have to steer The Lions away from heading down to the Championship.
