After months of rumors and speculation over the summer transfer window, Keylor Navas stayed put at Paris Saint-Germain past transfer deadline day last month. Navas was linked with multiple clubs over the transfer window, including Napoli. In the end, PSG simply failed to find a suitor for the veteran goalkeeper.
At one point during the summer transfer window, Napoli did have a need for a starting goalkeeper after David Ospina departed from the club as a free agent. Instead of going all out to bring in a high-priced goalkeeper to the team, Napoli decided to call on Alex Meret to be its new go-to starting goalkeeper, and it signed Salvatore Sirigu to provide depth at the position.
Heading into the winter transfer window, Napoli reportedly has no plans in mind to shake up its depth chart at the goalkeeper position.
Italian journalist Ciro Venerato recently took some time to speak to RaiNews24 (via Le10Sport) to note that Navas will not be donning a Napoli jersey anytime soon.
“There is only Alex Meret in Napoli’s future,” Venerato said. “The goalkeeper is ready to sign a renewal and will have no shadows behind him. Total denials about a possible comeback for Navas in January. Zero chance of seeing him in the Azzurri, Napoli is not even remotely thinking about the PSG goalkeeper.
Even Jorge Mendes knows this very well, who, not surprisingly, has proposed his client to Premier and La Liga clubs. … Napoli will not look for another goalkeeper in January.”
Navas still has not yet made a single appearance for PSG this season, although this could change in October when the team will have a total of eight fixtures in the month.
