Will PSG Return to Dominance in France and Achieve Champions League Glory?

Paris Saint-Germain won its tenth Ligue 1 title in club history last season with a 15-point advantage over second place, but for many supporters, the achievement was underwhelming due to the overall performance of the squad.

Under former manager, Mauricio Pochettino, PSG matches felt like a chore to watch and the star-studded lineup played uninspired football. This despite the fact the Argentine had the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Neymar Jr., and Lionel Messi at his disposal. The only way to get any enjoyment out of last season was to bet on PSG with bitcoin.

Now that a new chapter of PSG football is about to be written, things are looking a bit more optimistic. The capital club is still favored to win Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France, but so far this season, the performances on the pitch have matched the quality in the squad.

In the first two Ligue 1 matches of the season, PSG has scored a combined 10 goals while only giving up two. They’ve jumped out to lead Ligue 1 by two points over their rivals, Olympique de Marseille, and it’s going to take a monumental effort from another team—or a colossal collapse from PSG—to keep captain Marquinhos from hoisting the trophy at the end of the season.

Leading PSG is their superstar frontline of Mbappé, Messi, and Neymar, but behind them is a strengthened squad that should compliment them against the best of Europe. Stalwarts Marquinhos and Marco Verratti form the spine of PSG and newcomers Vitinha, Renato Sanches, Nordi Mukiele, and Hugo Ekitike provide quality depth at important positions on the pitch.

If you were to look up UEFA Champions League odds, PSG is likely in the top five, but one of the reasons many have doubts about whether they can win it all is due to their new manager, Christophe Galtier. The former OGC Nice and Lille OSC manager has never been truly tested under the bright lights of the Champions League. He may be able to dominate the French league but can he make the right adjustments against Manchester City, FC Bayern Munich, or Liverpool FC? Can he motivate a team of superstars who have won more than him to track back on defense and press as if their lives depended on it? We’ll have to wait and see.

As far as predictions go, I think it’s a safe bet that PSG will win Ligue 1. They simply have too much firepower. I would love for the club to win the Coupe de France, but I think that’s a competition where Galtier will experiment with his lineup and give some of the youngsters a chance to play. Expect PSG to make a deep run in the competition but fall just short.

As for the Champions League, well, a lot depends on the draw, fitness, and a little bit of luck. I like what I’ve seen so far from the team this season and the squad is as strong as ever. I think PSG will reach the Champions League final and then anything can happen from there.
