AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement knows very well what it takes to slow down Paris Saint-Germain’s superstar attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe. As manager of Club Brugge last season, he guided the side to a 1-1 draw result against PSG in UEFA Champions League group stage play, as the three star forwards combined for a mere two total shots on target in the contest.
Clement is now set to guide AS Monaco for a crucial early season showdown against PSG on Ligue 1 matchday four. He already has an idea of just what it will take to contain PSG’s trio of star forwards, which he touched on during a pre-match press conference on Friday.
“We cannot put individual markings on Messi, Neymar or Mbappe, but on the contrary we must defend collectively,” Clement said.
“We have to be focused to play a great game against this team, which is different from last season with an even more suitable Lionel Messi.”
Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe are all off to keen starts in league play this season. They are just coming off of a collective stout performance in PSG’s 7-1 Ligue 1 win over Lille OSC, where they all chipped in with goal contributions.
PSG will look to avenge its 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco from the second half of last season’s league campaign.
