Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi is entering the final year of his two-year contract that he signed with the capital club in 2021. The two parties have an option for a third season but no word on whether it will be exercised.
Nonetheless, if the 35-year-old does exit PSG after two years, Spanish media outlet Sport reports that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has asked club president Joan Laporta to study the hiring of Leo Messi for the end of this season, for the summer of 2023-24.
Xavi reportedly maintains a good relationship with the Argentine star. The tactician is convinced that his return can contribute a lot to the Catalan entity financially and in sporting terms.
The Barcelona boss still believes Messi has a lot left in the tank in terms of playing at his best level despite being in his early 30s. According to the information relayed by Sport, the goal would be for him to hang up his boots and do that as a Barcelona player.
Messi will be 36 years old when the 2023-24 season starts, and he has been linked to a possible move to MLS franchise Inter Miami. However, PSG would also be interested in keeping the Argentine for another season.
