The future of Lionel Messi after the 2022-23 season remains unclear as his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires next summer. Recent reports would suggest the capital club wants the 35-year-old for another season, but another option could be MLS.

Inter Miami has long been a rumored destination for Messi to spend the twilight of his career. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the South Florida club

Xavier Asensi, the Chief Business Officer for the MLS side, hinted at Inter Miami wanting to sign Messi and players of the Argentine’s caliber, which is the club’s objective.

“Yes, with nuances. Leo Messi cannot be compared with any other footballer. Having said that, what we are looking for is to be the reference of soccer in the United States and to be that, the important thing is the players and the spectacle that you are capable of giving,” Asensi said.

“To give it, you need the best players, and having them is a real objective of our club. As for Leo Messi, he is there, and then there are the others.”

The Spanish media outlet also asked whether Messi would be interested in Inter Miami before his career was over to have the experience of playing in the United States.

“It depends on him and his will. We want to have the best players in the world, and Messi, I think he is the best in history. From here on, it’s up to you. We want to be the reference of soccer in the USA; it is one of the objectives of the property,” Asensi said.

It will be interesting to see what Messi decides to do with his future considering his focus for the remainder of the year will be on the FIFA World Cup with Argentina and winning the UEFA Champions League for this 2022-23 campaign.
