Now-former Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino had to deal with quite a dilemma last season revolving around the club’s starting goalkeeper position. In the end, Pochettino opted to rotate between Gianluigi Donnarumma and Keylor Navas for the position in all competitions over the campaign.

Now, newly appointed PSG manager Christophe Galtier will have to come to a resolution on this dilemma. As he touched on in his introductory press conference, Galtier has not yet decided on who will be PSG’s go-to starting goalkeeper for the upcoming season, but he does aim to appoint a set No. 1 at the position.

“I will meet very quickly with the goalkeepers,” Galtier said. “I have seen the management of our two goalkeepers, but I do not have to comment on it.

“I have to meet them, but I have a principle of naming a number one and a number two, even if the second one can go ahead depending on the performance. It’s easier for me in terms of management, but also for them in terms of their position in the squad.”

One could speculate that PSG will look to offload Navas in the coming weeks in order to come to a firm resolution on this matter. However, the Costa Rican goalkeeper did note following PSG’s Ligue 1 season finale against Metz that he “will continue” at the club.

Galtier will first face a notable call on this matter when PSG meets Nantes in the 2022 Trophee des Champions Final later this month.
