Over Paris Saint-Germain’s four preseason friendly fixtures, manager Christophe Galtier rolled with a three-at-the-back setup. For one, he lined up PSG under a 3-4-1-2 formation in the 6-2 friendly victory against J1 League side Gamba Osaka.
For PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, as he noted to PSG TV, he has been much fond of Galtier’s tactical setup for the squad. Still, the Italian goalkeeper does see that playing under this formation is still a work in progress for the club.
“The coach really likes to press high, so I have to cover the spaces well, but I have worked on that before, so there are no problems,” Donnarumma said. “We work together with the defense and to be in harmony all together and try to get the ball back as soon as possible when we lose it.
“Everything is going well, we are working well. The three-man defense is changing a few things, but we just need to get some details right. We are well on our way to making it work.”
Playing under a three-at-the-back setup is not relatively new for Donnarumma and the rest of the PSG players who featured for the club last season. Now-former PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino often rolled out the squad under such setups during the latter half of this past season’s Ligue 1 campaign.
Next up for PSG is the upcoming 2022 Trophee des Champions Final against Nantes, where the club will have an opportunity to win its second trophy of the calendar year.
