After months of rumors and speculation, Kylian Mbappe elected to stay put at Paris Saint-Germain on a three-year contract extension deal. There were plenty of rumors in the days following the announcement regarding the factors that led to Mbappe’s decision to remain at PSG. Among them, the French forward reportedly did not want Leonardo to lead the club anymore as its sporting director.
Now, Leonardo is sharing his stance on these rumors.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Leonardo said that he “wasn’t told” that Mbappe’s extension deal was tied to his departure from the club.
“No,” Leonardo said. “It was the end of the Championship, and maybe it was time to decide things for the future. I wasn’t told that. But I don’t want to get into that kind of thing. And the fact that we kept a player of this level, French and Parisian, is important for PSG and Ligue 1.”
PSG decided to part ways with Leonardo after the conclusion of the Ligue 1 season. The club did not issue a public announcement making the move official, but it did release a statement last week confirming that Luis Campos joined on as its new football advisor.
