It was a matter of when and not if Paris Saint-Germain would trigger the option to buy on Nuno Mendes, who impressed this past season and took over the starting left-back role. While there are many things that former sporting director Leonardo did wrong, acquiring Mendes wasn’t one of them.
According to transfer window specialist Fabrizio Romano, Mendes joins the capital club on a €40-million fee, and the 19-year-old has plenty of room to continue to grow and lock the left-back position at PSG for years to come.
The Portugal international made 40 appearances this past season, scoring zero goals and recording three assists. Mendes will hope to improve defensively and offensively to secure a spot on the Portuguese national team for the World Cup later this year.
Furthermore, the full-back positions are now set at PSG, with Mendes commanding the left side and Achraf Hakimi on the right. So what was once a group of weakness is now a strength; all they’ll need to do this summer is figure out the depth behind those two players.
