What is Paris Saint-Germain’s Plan B If Mbappé Leaves?

You have to give Kylian Mbappé credit. Not only is he a phenomenal footballer, but he’s also pretty good at keeping a secret.

For months—if not years—those with even a passing interest in the world of football have wondered whether Mbappé will sign a new contract and remain at Paris Saint-Germain, or, leave and join Real Madrid. Him leaving may cause changes in the betting odds on PSG, so to stay up to date, you can visit betting.com which provides live odds on almost every sport there is out there.

Media outlets in Spain and France have been competing to see who can break the story first and as a result, fans have been treated to a host of misleading information. To be honest, the entire ordeal has been a frustrating mess.

Up until now, the PSG rumor mill and those leading the club have been relatively quiet regarding transfers coming and going. They certainly know more than I do, but if they’re in the dark like I am regarding Mbappé’s decision, they should be crafting a Plan B to replace the France international should he bold.

You’re never going to replace a player of Mbappé’s quality, but the money you were going to spend on his signing bonus and increased wages could certainly be used to fill holes in a very unbalanced squad.

In attack, PSG could do worse than to replace Mbappé with another French winger who used to play in the French capital: Christopher Nkunku. The RB Leipzig winger left Paris in 2019 and has blossomed into a fantastic attack-minded player. He will cost significantly more than the €15 million Leipzig paid for him, but Nkunku came up through the PSG academy and is exactly the type of player the club needs right now.

The midfield is another area on the pitch that needs to be addressed. With Marco Verratti the only truly world-class player at that position, PSG should look to bring Paul Pogba in on a free transfer once his contract with Manchester United expires. The Frenchman will demand lofty wages, but they should be within PSG’s range especially if Mbappé is off the books.

Lastly, PSG will need a manager who can command a dressing room that consists of Pogba, Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, and others. Zinedine Zidane is obviously the name every PSG fan wants to see come into the club and while he may be waiting for the France national team job to open up, the right salary could tempt him to put those dreams on hold.

If PSG loses Mbappé to Madrid, it will sting, but PSG cannot be caught flat-footed here. They need a plan that they can execute on and it should be in motion now if not already.
