Aguero Discusses What the 2021 Copa America Win Meant to Messi’s Legacy

Lionel Messi achieved a long-awaited goal last summer as he led the Argentina national team to a Copa America win. He helped guide La Albiceleste to grand victory over the Brazilian national team in the 2021 Copa America Final.

For Sergio Aguero, he sees that the Copa America win was a special moment for the Argentina national team, especially for Messi, which he spoke about to ESPN Argentina.

“The title we were all waiting for but above all, him,” Aguero said. “It gave an extra joy to everyone. Especially to him. He took that weight off him that he had for so many years of wanting to win a title with the national team. It shows on the pitch, the joy, the people… He enjoys it much more.”

Messi shined over the tournament, which included picking up key goal contributions in the knockout stage.

For now, Messi is set to feature for Paris Saint-Germain over the remainder of its Ligue 1 schedule. The Argentine has recorded 10 assists in league play so far this season, although he still sits at a mere two goals scored in such matches.

PSG is set to return to action in the upcoming Ligue 1 home fixture against Lorient. Messi has been featuring in training as of late heading into the match.
