‘Too Sweet’ – Pundit Questions Whether Marquinhos Is the Right Player to Serve as Captain of PSG

Paris Saint-Germain crashing out of the UEFA Champions League continues to be a talking point for French media outlets.

The capital club is currently undergoing a reflection period as they determine what’s next with the futures of manager Mauricio Pochettino and sporting director Leonardo.

French football pundit Walid Acherchour took stock in another situation that needs change at PSG, the captaincy. On Twitter, Acherchour took stock of Marquinhos as the leader of Les Parisiens, and he believes a different voice is needed.

“We took stock of a lot of PSG’s problems so there’s no point in repeating it, but having a captain as nice as Marquinhos is inconceivable. He will return at the end of the match and shake hands with Neymar or others as if nothing had happened,” Acherchour tweeted.

“After his performances are also catastrophic from Real Madrid but even when he was very good, it was already too sweet, I’m sorry.”

Marquinhos’ biggest test as captain came in the second half in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 against Real Madrid. He had the opportunity to galvanize the squad as they began crumbling, leading to the hat-trick by Karim Benzema in less than 20 minutes.

PSG has had the issues over the past couple of years, lacking leadership from a captain or other players, that can prevent the squad from spiraling out of control leading to losses like those against FC Barcelona, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.
