Paris Saint-Germain forward Angel Di Maria’s time in the French capital will be coming to an end soon, and it seems as though his international career is going to follow suit.
TyC Sports reports that Di Maria plans to retire from the National Team after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The main reason for his decision would be to give space to the next generation of players, even though his good performances allow him to continue his career at the highest level.
Di Maria will continue playing club football, but it will be the end for the Argentine at the international level later this year.
Here is the list of accomplishments Di Maria has made while wearing La Albiceleste jersey:
- He won a title with the Major: the Copa América 2021, with his goal against Brazil in the Maracaná final. He also won the 2007 U-20 World Cup in Canada and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
- He played 122 games and is the 4th player with the most appearances in the history of the Major behind Messi (160), Mascherano (147), and Zanetti (143).
- He scored 24 goals, 8th in the National Team’s historical table behind Messi (81), Batistuta (56), Agüero (41), Crespo (35), Maradona (34), Higuaín (31), and Artime (24 in 25 PJ).
- He played in three World Cups (South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Russia 2018). It will go for the fourth presence of him in Qatar 2022.
- He was summoned to five editions of the Copa América (Argentina 2011, Chile 2015, United States 2016, Brazil 2019, and Brazil 2021).
